Some of Aldiss’ work (but not enough) has found its way into film.

A.I.: Artificial Intelligence
Based on the the science fiction short story Super Toys Last All Summer Long, AI was directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 2001. A special effects extravaganza, AI is a rather poignant tale of the journey of a robotic boy on a quest. He’s looking for the “blue fairy” from Pinoccio. Stanley Kubrick originally wanted to put the story on screen and worked extensively with Aldiss to develop a screenplay. After Kubrick’s death, Spielberg bought the rights and made the movie.

Frankenstein Unbound
Based on the novel of the same name, Frankenstein Unbound, directed by Roger Corman was released in 1990.
The film was not successful at the box office. It certainly does not do the book justice, and many Aldiss fans were disappointed at this first attempt at putting the great man’s work on the big screen. However, some film buffs claim that it works as a high-camp comedy

Brothers of the head
Based on the 1973 novel about Siamese twin rock stars, Brothers of the Head is a dark, bleak satire of the rock music world. It is rated R in most countries and is not for the faint-hearted. However, for those who like edgy alternative film, it is engaging and powerful. |
